What now in modern day society is a sport was in the past a skill used to hunt or in war.
The earliest period to which bows and arrows can be evidenced is some 28,000 to 40,000 years ago. The period being known as the Aurignacian Period, more commonly associated with Homo sapiens and Neanderthals throughout Europe and parts of Africa.
Some 5000 years ago the Egyptians practiced archery in war against the Persians and also for hunting. The Romans, Goths, Huns and Vandals of the early Medieval period were highly skilled archers and of course later the English Longbow being the most notable.
There are examples of archery throughout the world if we look back through history, some fact and some legend.
Archery, in the form of competition, has always been around through archers in the military or adjacent villages/towns holding competitions against each other to determine who was the best archer. Officially as a sport Archery GB, formerly knows as The Grand National Archery Society, was established in 1844 to be the governing body of target archery. Modern tournament formats have a history prior to this. There are examples of competitions that date back further than that and are still held today, founded in Yorkshire in 1673 the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow for the gents and The Ascham Silver Arrow for the ladies, and no I have not spelt the word wrong, it is old English. 1790 brought the first tournament of the Royal Toxophilite.
